Xbox 360 is a video game console designed and developed by Microsoft Corporation. The console was introduced to the market in the year 2005. The Xbox 360 came as a stylish, light weighted and compact console when compared with previous version named Xbox. The Xbox 360 consist of two processors namely the central processing unit and the graphical processing unit. The graphical processor is a very high speed processing unit and runs at a frequency of several GigaHertz. When introduced to the market, the Xbox 360 was considered as the toughest competitor against the Sony's Playstation 2 because of the price tag and extended features available in the Xbox 360.

RRoD

RRoD stands for the Red Rings of Death. RRoD is a condition where your console stops working and displays an error E74 on the screen and accompanied by three red lights glowing near the power button. Xbox 360 has been loaded with some predefined error codes in order to warn the user about problems which the console faces. One such type of error is the E74. This error means that the hardware has been overheated due to long working hour or failure in the components in the motherboard due to weak solder joints. Apart from the three red light error there are also one or two or four red light errors. But, these errors do not affect the console much when compared with that of the three red light error. The three red light error is considered to be the worst as it may permanently cause damage to the motherboard.

REASON FOR FAILURE

The reason for the failure is due to overheating of the console. Central Processing Unit and the Graphical Processing Unit are placed above the heat sink and in between lies the aluminum X clamp in order to hold the processor to the motherboard. An intercooler is provided to supply cool air to the processor. The intercooler is nothing but a small fan which is a product of NYKO intercooler. Microsoft in its statement had said that large power consumption by the intercooler is one of the reasons for overheating in the motherboard. Because of the jam packed hardware there is inadequate air flow to the processors and heat is not properly dissipated.

FIXING THE PROBLEM

The technical reason for this problem is mainly the overheating of the console. The overheating is because of the failure of the heat sinks to work properly. Also the intercooler does not provide enough cooling to the processors and as a result the temperature of the processors goes beyond the normal working temperature. There are two ways to fix this problem.

First method is to sending the console to Microsoft service station and get it repaired. You need to wait for 4 to 12 weeks to get it repaired from Microsoft service center.

Second method is to repair the console on your own with the help of repair video tutorials and basic household tools. This is the cheapest method and reliable method to repair the console.
